CSAA Insurance Group Celebrates Century of Insurance

The AAA Insurer Protects Members, Supports Communities Since 1914

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., July 1, 2014 –
It all started 100 years ago with a desire to offer affordable automobile insurance to AAA members. This month, CSAA Insurance Group, a AAA Insurer, celebrates a century of growing and adapting to serve the changing needs of its AAA policyholders.

“We are extremely proud of this historic achievement,” said CSAA Insurance Group President and CEO Paula Downey. “One hundred years ago our motto was ‘service and savings.’ That continuing dedication to service, community and relationships with AAA members is what has kept us strong and will guide us through the next century and beyond.”

In the summer of 1914, what was then known as the California State Automobile Association Inter-Insurance Bureau sold its first 100 auto insurance policies. At that time, there were only 257 miles of paved roads in the entire United States and an estimated 1.7 million cars – one for every 58 Americans. The most popular car was the Ford Model T and the most common type of insurance claims were blown-out tires thanks to rough roads, weak rubber and thoroughfares littered with glass shards from broken bottles that fell off milk delivery vehicles.

Today, the company now known as CSAA Insurance Group has nearly 2.4 million policyholders located in 23 states and Washington D.C. The best-selling passenger car is the Toyota Camry, and our nation has 2.6 million miles of paved roads. Americans possess an estimated 230.2 million cars, SUVs, vans and pickups, with 24% of households owning three or more vehicles. The most common auto insurance claims are for fender benders and cracked windshields.

What started with a handful of employees in a small room in the Monadnock Building in San Francisco, California is now one of the top 20 personal lines property casualty insurance groups in the United States with more than $2.8 billion in revenue. CSAA Insurance Group has over 3,500 employees based primarily in seven locations throughout the United States: Las Vegas, Nevada; Glendale, Arizona; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Colorado Springs, Colorado, Hamilton, New Jersey, Wilmington, Delaware and a headquarters in Walnut Creek, California.

The company’s legacy of service to its communities and AAA members continues to play a vital role in the company’s values. CSAA Insurance Group employees volunteer at more than 300 nonprofit projects each year and the company provides 24 hours of paid time off annually in support of employee volunteerism. In just the past two years, the Community Safety Foundation, funded by CSAA Insurance Group, has donated over $2 million dollars to the American Red Cross to help provide disaster preparedness training to local communities.

“Clearly, a lot has changed over the past 100 years,” said Downey. “In the years to come, we will continue to provide the service our policyholders value so much, and look for new ways to protect them—because 100 is just the beginning.”
