CSAA Insurance Group Employee Elected Diversity Task Force Chair for California Department of Insurance

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., July 24, 2020 – Sal Peinado, Jr., senior supplier diversity consultant for CSAA Insurance Group, has been reappointed by California State Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara to the 2020-2021 Diversity Task Force for the California Department of Insurance. Peinado was reelected as Chair of the Task Force by fellow members at the second quarterly Task Force meeting. In this one-year term, Peinado will play a vital role in supporting supplier diversity within the state’s $310 billion dollar insurance industry.

"The California Department of Insurance remains committed to increasing procurement opportunities for diverse suppliers as well as working to advance greater representation among underrepresented communities, including women, LGBTQ+, veterans, disabled veterans, and people of color on the governing boards of insurance companies,” emphasized Commissioner Lara. “My reappointment of Sal to the Department’s Insurance Diversity Task Force, and his subsequent reelection as Chair by his Task Force colleagues, reflects my continued confidence in his leadership of this important and innovative initiative that is seen as a nationwide model within the insurance industry.”

California’s Insurance Diversity Initiative focuses on diversity issues within the state’s multi-billion dollar insurance industry, and encourages increasing procurement from diverse suppliers. The Insurance Diversity Task Force identifies actions the commissioner can take to encourage insurance companies to contract for services with diverse businesses and increase diversity within their governing boards. Diverse businesses include minority-, women-, veteran-, disabled veteran-, and LGBTQ+-owned businesses.

“The Task Force is committed to making a positive difference by advancing diversity in the insurance industry,” said Peinado. “I am honored to help maintain our focus on the power of equity and inclusion, and will continue to embrace our unique identities, experiences, and points of view as we expand the state’s pool of diverse suppliers in service of California insurance customers.”

At CSAA Insurance Group, Peinado is responsible for developing and implementing the supplier diversity program within Sourcing, which considers aspects of diversity and inclusion and corporate social responsibility in supplier selection. Since 2013, CSAA Insurance Group has steadily increased its support for diverse suppliers, and expanded the pool of suppliers the company considers. The company has been previously recognized for these efforts by the California Department of Insurance, receiving the Supplier Diversity Champion Award in 2014, and the Supplier Diversity Trailblazer Award in 2016. Peinado also serves on the boards of the Western Regional Minority Supplier Development Council and Financial Services RoundTable for Supplier Diversity.
